Annie Leibovitz
"A photographers life is a life looking through a lens"
Annie Leibovitz is an american photographer who comes from a big family. They were always in the car moving from place to place so she saw art/photos already through a frame which was the car window. She takes staged and un-staged photos in color and black and white, Annie uses a range of different format cameras from medium format to large to SLR's. One word to describe Annie is very daring meaning she's goes beyond the limit of most photographers to get the perfect image and is willing to experiment with anything which is what makes her a such a good photographer.
Annie classed the camera as part of the family. The camera allowed her to be alone in the world with a purpose, She says that the best kind of photography is when the things that surround you make you feel like part of the photo-which is the best way to get the perfect photo in her opinion.
In her many years of being a photographer she has photographed a-lot of famous people but to start it off she did a commission for the rolling stones and became part of the gang and ended up going on tour with them.
She then became interested in dance photographer because of her mother being a dancer. Annie's inspiration was Barabara Morgan->
who was also an american photographer. But She then realised dance could not be photographed as she said "its a portrait of a moment".
Annie Leibovitz photographed a range of celebrities for example : The rolling stones, Fleetwood mac, George Clooney, Kristen Dunsten, Julia Roberts, Jamie Fox, Michael Jackson, Whoopi Goldburg, Demi Moore, Chris Rock, Nichole Kidman, Keira Knightly, Morgan Freeman, Robert Downey. JR, The Osbourne's and many more. Even though she did a-lot of portrait and fashion shoots for vogue she didn't consider herself to be a fashion photographer.
Annie Leibovitz tries to communicate passion and emotion through her photographs in my opinion. She photographs a lot of fairytales with famous celebrities, mainly actors because they have experience with turning on emotions and facial experessions which are shown within the photos and shown successfully , i would class this as a staged documentary photography. I don't think her photos have a specific purpose other than the fact she is trying to create present fairytales. She uses a lot of bright colour in her photographs and develops them further to manipulate more colour into her photos too make them eye-catching. Annie doesn't do close ups of these kinds of staged shots, she shoots a large depth of field to try and capture every single detail within 1 photo. I wouldn't say she has any influences as regards to her photographs because Annie is a very unique photographer, the only influences i would say she would have is fairytales/films , for example : peter pan, wizard of oz, snow white and Aladdin - all disney films. I like her images i think they're rare very creative and unlike anything i've ever seen before. I wouldn't say this has influenced my assignments but in the future it would be a challenge i would like to try and do something like this or any form of staged documentary photography. My work is very different to her's because i like to capture natural emotions whereas Annie captures staged emotions so it doesn't have as much meaning.
